The conferment of the Khalid Kadir Award was made possible following the generous contribution from Professor Dato’ Dr. Khalid Kadir, the current JCSMHS Deputy Head of School (Education). Prof. Khalid contributed a total of RM50,000 as prize money for the Khalid Kadir Award that would last for a duration of 20 years. An internationally respected clinician and researcher, Prof. Khalid was appointed as the Foundation Professor of Medicine by Monash University Sunway campus in 2004. He was the first Head of Clinical School in Johor Bahru who was instrumental in the setting up of the school.
The initiative to confer the Khalid Kadir award came about years ago when Prof. Khalid was diagnosed with leukaemia and was in a critical stage. As an educator who is greatly dedicated to nurturing the next generation of doctors, Prof. Khalid had thus put in his will the decision to contribute to this award. Apart from that, it was also through Prof. Khalid that MMA Johor Branch, which has been a great supporter of CSJB since a decade ago has also joined hand to strengthen such a meaningful initiative by awarding the MMA Johor Branch Award.
“The Khalid Kadir Award aims to encourage and acknowledge the top graduate who attained the highest academic marks among the cohort trained locally in the Sunway and Johor Bahru campus, while the MMA Johor Branch Award rewards the top graduate who achieved academic and co-curricular excellence, throughout the five years of their MBBS study,” said Professor Khalid.
“We believe that the awards not just encourage budding future doctors to strive for an all-rounded excellence, but it also great testimonies of the JCSMHS graduates being exemplary doctors who contribute to both the local and international communities,” said Prof. Khalid.

Winner of the Khalid Kadir Award
Dr. Yo Wee Shuan has been an outstanding student throughout the five years of his MBBS study with his shining academic record. He was the student representative in his first and second year. He won the Year 1 faculty prize for best overall performance, the Carl Wood Prize for obtaining highest score in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and he was also invited to be a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society.
Besides maintaining excellent academic records, Dr Yo was a volunteer for Mercy Malaysia mobile clinics and served as a guide in Johor Bahru Alzheimers Disease Support Association. He was also active in Dignity and Services, through which he mentored youths with learning disabilities on skills for independent living and self-advocacy. At the same time, he is also an avid sportsman and a talented singer and guitar player.
Dr Yo graduated with a First Class Honours in MBBS last year. He was in the limelight as he is the first graduate from Monash University Sunway campus to have won the Sophie Davis Memorial Prize for being the top achiever in the MBBS course. Dr Yo is currently is attached to Alfred Hospital, Melbourne as an intern. He is also a budding researcher, currently involved in several clinical studies.
Winner of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Johor Branch Award
Dr. Quek Hui Sze was an exemplary student and a high achiever, having scored Distinction in the third, fourth and fifth year of MBBS. She was the recipient of the Recognition Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cambridge Certificate of Education in 2007 and a recipient of the Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Loy Hean Hong Scholarship award in 2005. In 2008, she led the team that prepared the student academic report for the Australian Medical Council during their accreditation visit to Monash University Sunway campus. She was also the Head of Secretariat for the 22nd East Asian Medical Students Conference (EAMSC) held in 2009.
Dr. Quek has a great compassion to serve the poor and destitute. She was the Community Service Officer for Monash University Medical Students Society (MUMEDS) from 2008 to 2010, of which she was actively involved in many charity events. During her elective posting in India in 2010, Dr. Quek participated in charity projects which provide health screenings and free treatment for rural patients and students. Last year, she joined the Community Health Development mission trip to the Mokens (Sea Gypsies) of the Andaman Sea to help with rebuilding the community post tsunami in 2004.
Beside excelling in academic pursuits and serving fervently in charity works, she is also good an avid sportswoman. Dr. Quek graduated with a MBBS last year and she is now attached to Southern Health Care Network, Victoria, Australia as an intern.
